AUSTRALIAN MARQUETRY BOX: Post VII

The AUSTRALIA BOX: Marquetry

Sunday 31/08/2014

Weather is great after all the rain, the air is clean and crisp, still a bit cold, but not too bad.

Not something we see everyday, an alpaca walking across the road, I know its rumored that we have kangaroos hopping down the street, yes this does happen occasionally, mostly in WA, but never an alpaca.

I have completed the inside of the box, done the trim around the edges.

I've made the hinges and a wood latch.

I have put masking tape along the back of the box where the hinges are to be located and on the back of the hinge, then super glued the hinges into position.

Then cut around the hinge with a scalpel.

Carefully remove the hinge,

leaving a clearly defined area where the hinges will be seated.

Using a small very sharp carving chisel.

I cut a clean valley around the area.

Chisel out the area.

Check for fit.

Clean out and set the depth, using a Dremel router. This can also be done with the chisel.

Apply PVA glue to the both surfaces, leaving a dry area for the moving parts of the hinge.

Press the hinges into position, and wipe off excess glue.

Securely clamp.

After the glue has partially set, remove the tape from the box.

Then slowly and very gently open the lid to its full extent, remove all excess glue from around the hinges.

Now the catch, much the same procedure as the hinges.

Apply masking tape;

Measure and mark the center of the lid.

Apply tape to the back of the latch.

Apply super glue.

Using a scalpel to align the latch, hold secure until super glue is set.

Super glue and align the bottom of the latch.

Cut around the latch.

Remove the latch and tape.

Cut out waste material with a chisel and Router.

Apply PVA Glue.

Press the latch into position.

Clean off excess glue and allow to dry.

The construction of the box is now complete.

Next post, I will make the base and start sanding.
Thanks for visiting
